At Daniel K Inouye Elementary School, extracurricular activities come in many forms. Here's a brief listing of what we do outside of regular PE classes:
1. Intramural Sports
These sports include cross country, volleyball, basketball, golf, and darts
2. Interscholastic Sports
Our Leilehua Complex is very good about offering our students athletic opportunities. In fact, we have an athletic event every quarter of the school year. In the first quarter: Cross Country Invitational; second quarter: Volleyball Tournament; third quarter: Basketball Tournament; and fourth quarter: Track Meet.
3. Community Service
Since 1995 when I first started teaching PE at Mililani Mauka Elementary, we have always included community service and the teaching of empathy in our PE Program. Some of the events offered are:
a. "Turkey Trot for Charity" is a canned food drive to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank at Thanksgiving; b. "Jingle Bells Run" is a used toy, game, or other donation to benefit the Salvation Army at Christmas; c. "Jump Rope for Heart" of course benefits the American Heart Association.
All these events are for donations and we do a grade level run, with music.
4. After School PE
Over the years we have had many after school programs for running and various sports. This has had names like, "The Milers Club," "The Eagle Running Club," "After School PE," etc.
5. Remedial PE/Skills Clinic
We try to find time in the PE schedule for extra help for students having difficulty with specific skills.
6. Saturday Family Fun Runs
In past years, we would have students and their siblings and parents come on Saturday mornings for a group run.
