National Standards For Physical Education
NOTE: The National PE Standards listed below are the Standards that were being implemented in 1995, my first year of teaching PE, when I was at Mililani Mauka Elementary. The State of Hawaii did not have State PE Standards at that time. When the State of Hawaii established their own PE Standards, they adapted the National Standards listed below, verbatim. Then, further developments ensued and current National and Hawaii State Standards “abbreviated” the list below. Now, there are only the first four, 1-4, and the last three, 5-7, have been deleted.
However, I have personally always applied all seven, original National Standards while at Mililani Mauka and since I have been at Daniel K. Inouye Elementary. My opinion is that the seven, original PE Standards are inclusive of all areas of movement, fitness, social/emotional, and lifestyle health and skill development. For the elementary age child, all these areas, especially the social/emotional, are critically important.
Standard #1:
Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.
Standard #2:
Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.
Standard #3:
Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
Standard #4:
Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard #5:
Students demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior.
Standard #6:
Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings
Standard #7:
Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction
