ASSESSMENT
Assessment of students in Physical Education is based on the seven P.E. Standards. Taking all seven Standards as a whole, three major areas or “strands” emerge. These three areas are:
A. Movement Skills/Athletic Skills
B. Physical Fitness
C. Social Skills/Cooperative Play/Sportsmanship/GLO’s
Each area is measured/rated for each student at every PE session. For physical fitness, each student has a performance record which is maintained from entry into our school to their release from our school. Fitness scores are measured to the student's own personal performance level, using the "Personal Record" approach, or "PR." This establishes a criteria-referenced assessment as opposed to a norm-referenced assessment.
Movement Skills and Social Skills are measured using a basic rubric:
Level 3 ........... "Proficient"
Level 2 ........... "Satisfactory/Adequate"
Level 1 ........... "Below Satisfactory/Inadequate"
The cumulative scores on each of the three criterion areas is used to calculate the report card grade at the end of a quarter of the school year.
I have used this system since 1995 and it has served me well. Documentation for each student is maintained for all three areas. This makes for NOT only an accurate report card grade but also helps in giving “Status Reports” and other evaluations, for each and every student. The data gathered is not only essential to report card grading, but in helping the classroom teacher and parents with a "narrative" regarding their child's school performance.
