Please note:
Generally speaking, there are two main areas of PE instruction: Lower grades and Upper grades. Therefore, I've divided this section into Lessons for K, 1, and 2 and Lessons for 3, 4, and 5.
Obviously, there is a wide range in ability levels and developmental stages WITHIN each section. So, the PE teacher designs lessons following an appropriate scope and sequence which is at the correct level for the students involved.
For example: Grade 2 students may be doing many of the same skills as Kindergarten, but at a "mastery level" as opposed to the Kindergarten "introductory level." Skills are taught at that level. Also, by Grade 2 we begin a basic introduction to "team sports" to prepare them for Grade 3.
At the Upper grade level, starting with Grade 3, we have "Team Sports." Again, it is obvious that a Grade 3 student may be a "beginner" at the sport, while a Fifth grader may be advanced in knowledge and skills. The teacher has to make the appropriate adjustments in planning those lessons.
Lower Grade PE emphases: body movements, locomotor skills, object manipulation skills, physical fitness, social skills, striking skills, throwing and receiving skills, etc.
Upper Grade PE emphases: Team Sports and the basic skills/techniques for Team Sports, team work, group cooperation, sportsmanship
